Research by the Swiss banking giant UBS shows that businesses aren’t holding back. The 2025 projected global spend on AI technology is tipped to reach $360 billion, 60% up on the previous year, which in the words of UBS: “Reflects a dramatic shift from experimental adoption to enterprise-scale integration, as companies race to embed AI into everything from customer service to supply chain optimization.”
This begs the question what does ethical AI mean? What are its challenges and how can businesses meet the new responsibilities that go with it?
Defining Ethical AI in Business
Put simply, ethical AI involves developing and deploying AI systems in ways that are transparent, fair, and accountable. For business, that means adhering to legal requirements and striving to do what’s right, in other words prioritizing societal good alongside making money. Historically, these goals were often seen as incompatible, with ethics viewed as a constraint on innovation. But today, technology has flipped the script: ethical alignment is fast becoming a competitive advantage, not a compromise.
Transparency entails clear communication about how AI systems work and the rationale behind their decisions. Fairness addresses the imperative to avoid AI biases – ensuring equitable outcomes for all – while accountability calls for businesses to own up to both AI-driven decisions and their impacts.

There’s no question that AI increases efficiency and saves money, but that in turn has led to fears about its impact on job security and employee displacement. Businesses now have the responsibility of reskilling their workforce while exploring ways of integrating AI into their systems without sidelining employees. A large number of financial services companies are future proofing their workforce by investing in internal mobility and structured upskilling programmes. For example, the US investment bank Citigroup recently launched Citi AI, a suite of generative AI tools deployed across 11 countries and over 150,000 employees. The tools support a range of back-office functions (including document summarisation, policy navigation, and communication drafting), while staff are being upskilled through self-directed courses and supervised apprenticeships to foster an AI-first mindset. The scheme has already been hailed as a blueprint for how businesses can embrace AI without abandoning their people.

According to the UK Future Skills Report 2025, many firms are embedding skills strategies into their business planning, with training budgets now evenly split between technical skills (AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity), and behavioural competencies (coaching, adaptability). As an example of this proactive strategy, UK and Irish banks are building so-called “digital learning factories” and in-house certification hubs for AI, ESG compliance, and blockchain literacy.
As AI reshapes the workplace, younger people are demanding values alongside innovation. According to a 2025 joint survey by the polling organisation Gallup and the global services company EY, nearly half of Gen Z professionals use generative AI weekly, although 41% said they were anxious about its long-term implications. Despite their digital fluency, many Gen Z professionals overestimate their AI literacy while underperforming on critical evaluation tasks. The confidence gap has already prompted many companies to rethink how they train, engage, and retain younger talent. Gen Z expects transparency, ethical alignment, and purpose-driven work and they’re more likely to leave jobs that don’t reflect those values.
Corporate Responsibility and “AI-Washing”
Some companies have been accused of “AI-washing”, i.e. exaggerating or misrepresenting their AI capabilities. AI washing is a big deal primarily because it undermines trust (especially in sectors like financial services and healthcare), and makes it difficult to separate reality from smoke and mirrors. Ethical AI calls for authenticity and genuine commitment which is why overseas regulators aren’t holding back from cracking down on offenders. America’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) launched enforcement actions against the firms Delphia and Global Predictions for overstating their AI capabilities. Both companies were fined $225,000 and $175,000 respectively, while SEC Chair Gary Gensler warned the industry about the hurt caused to investors by such deception. The SEC’s Cybersecurity and Emerging Technologies Unit has made AI-washing a priority, closely scrutinizing how companies describe their systems to both investors and consumers.

Although ethical AI has immense potential, it does have a dark side. In 2016 Microsoft launched its chatbot Tay which was supposed to engage with Twitter users to learn from their conversations. However, within 24 hours Tay began generating comments that were racist, misogynistic, and deeply offensive. Shocking yes, but the chatbot’s design was not to blame. The malfunction stemmed from malicious users who deliberately fed it harmful and disturbing content.
