On 25 November 2025, the Future of Utilities webinar series launched with a timely discussion on Securing the Future of European Energy. Against the backdrop of geopolitical upheaval since 2022, the session examined how Europe can strengthen its energy systems in the face of unprecedented challenges.
The conversation highlighted how the invasion of Ukraine exposed Europe’s dependence on Russian supply and underscored the urgent need for diversification. Panelists explored the balance between reliability, decarbonisation, sovereignty, and affordability — priorities that often compete but must be reconciled to deliver resilience. Audience polls revealed strong views on how Europe should prioritise these goals, sparking debate on whether true independence is achievable or whether strategic diversification is the more realistic path forward.
Infrastructure investment emerged as a non‑negotiable priority, with discussions on grid capacity, scenario planning, and the role of regulation in enabling rapid change. Affordability was also central, as speakers stressed the importance of ensuring that households and industries are not priced out of global markets during the transition. Cybersecurity and nuclear energy were debated as critical components of resilience, while the return of nuclear capacity by 2035 was weighed against cost and deployment challenges.
